Ever Thought of Going to Armenia?
On May 6, 2018 by sandraHave you ever thought of visiting Armenia? Well, I can tell you on a personal basis, as an Armenian living in the USA, the thought of visiting the motherland has always been a dream that I wasn’t sure when was ever going to be fulfilled. As a traveler at heart, I have no idea why it had taken me so long to visit, but last September I had the opportunity to take the plunge and visit this very special place. I didn’t quite know what I would expect, but I knew it was going to be a very emotional trip and one I would never forget especially because I was going to get the chance to visit with my mom and aunt who had never been themselves.
If I visited in September 2017, you may wonder “so why the blog post now?” Well, I realized when I was visiting Armenia, there are so many historical monuments and sites that it becomes very hard and overwhelming to distinguish what the importance of each place is. Armenian history goes back thousands and thousands of years and I wanted to highlight the significance of each location. When I was sharing my photos with my friends on Facebook in real time, I loved giving a recap of my day and my friends really learned a lot about Armenia and my culture through my Facebook posts. They loved hearing my recaps so much that they really urged me to share this information with the rest of the world….and of course I think it’s a brilliant idea!!!
First off you may wonder….Where is Armenia? Armenia is a small country situated in between the continents of Europe and Asia. It is a mountainous territory that is bordered by the countries of Georgia in the north, Azerbaijan in the east, Iran to the south, and Turkey to the west. It has an estimated population of about 2.9 million individuals. While it is a rather small country, it has a VERY rich history. If you are visiting from Los Angeles, there are currently no direct flights to Armenia—either you make a stop in Paris or Moscow. Most commonly, many individuals will take the route of visiting Armenia by stopping in Moscow as it is generally the fastest and cheapest route, at least from the west coast. (“fastest” but still about a 17 hour flight time). There is one airport in Armenia called Zvartnots International Airport which is in the capital city of Yerevan.
So…are you ready for a week’s worth of Armenian history and culture?? Come with me on my journey and allow me to re-live my adventures. Hopefully by the end of this, I can convince you to visit this amazing country and if not, at least learn about our rich history!
Here we goooooo……
